Abundance of the reef-building Petaloconchus varians (Gastropoda: Vermetidae) on intertidal rocky shores at Ilha Grande Bay, southeastern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BREVES,ANDRÉ; SZÉCHY,MARIA TERESA M. DE; LAVRADO,HELENA P.; JUNQUEIRA,ANDREA O.R..
ABSTRACT The reef-building vermetid Petaloconchus varians occurs in the western Atlantic Ocean, from the Caribbean Sea to the southern coast of Brazil. The present study evaluated the abundance of P. varians on intertidal rocky shores in Ilha Grande Bay (Rio de Janeiro State), and characterized their reefs, describing the species density, besides the weight and the belt width of the reefs. Petaloconchus varians reefs were recorded at 25 sites, with rocky shores exposed to different wave action (very sheltered, sheltered, semi-exposed and exposed) and slopes (10° to 46°). Clusters of individuals constructed large reefs along the middle intertidal zone, creating a wide belt (38 cm to 2 m). The density of P. varians and the weight of the reefs ranged from 620...

An integrative approach to species delimitation in Benthomangelia (Mollusca: Conoidea) ArchiMer
Puillandre, Nicolas; Baylac, Michel; Boisselier, Marie-catherine; Cruaud, Corinne; Samadi, Sarah.
DNA sequences are currently used to propose primary hypotheses of species delimitation, especially when morphological variability is difficult to assess. In an integrative taxonomy framework, these hypotheses are then compared with other characters, such as morphology or geography, to produce robust species delimitations. For this purpose, the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene has been sequenced for almost 50 specimens of the genus Benthomangelia, a deep-sea marine gastropod genus, collected in the South-West Pacific. Five genetic groups, displaying low and high genetic distances respectively within and between groups, were defined. COI hypotheses were compared with both the results obtained with the independent nuclear 28S gene and with an elliptic...

Assessment of human enteric viruses in cultured and wild bivalve molluscs ArchiMer
Luz Vilarino, M.; Le Guyader, Soizick; Polo, David; Schaeffer, Julien; Krol, Joanna; Romalde, Jesus L..
Standard and real-time reverse transcription-PCR (rRT-PCR) procedures were used to monitor cultured and wild bivalve molluscs from the Ria de Vigo (NW Spain) for the main human enteric RNA viruses, specifically, norovirus (NoV), hepatitis A virus (HAV), astrovirus (AsV), rotavirus (RT), enterovirus (EV), and Aichi virus (AiV). The results showed the presence of at least one enteric virus in 63.4% of the 41 samples analyzed. NoV GII was the most prevalent virus, detected in 53.7% of the samples, while NoV GI, AsV, EV, and RV were found at lower percentages (7.3, 12.2, 12.2, and 4.9%, respectively). In general, samples obtained in the wild were more frequently contaminated than those from Cultured (70.6 vs. 58.3%) molluscs and were more readily contaminated...

The REPAMO network (network ofmollusc pathology), created in 1986, ensures the survey of shellfish health status along French coasts according? to European Directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EEC. The aims of the network are 1 - to prevent the introduction and spread of exotic pathogens, 2-to study the means to decrease the impact of pathogens already present and to survey their evolution. In 2003, the REPAMO network focused on the survey oflisted diseases (bonamiosis and marteiliosis) in two areas under agreement process (Banc de Granville and zone X) and on the study of abnormal morlalities. Number of reported abnormal morlalities has increased in 2003. This rise can be partly explained by the recent network restructuring, but also by the summer heatwave and...

Certifying the French population of Crassostrea gigas free from exotic diseases : a risk analysis approach ArchiMer
Thebault, Anne; Berthe, Franck; Audige, L..
Sample-size calculation in the context of the surveys aimed at substantiating freedom from infection have been commonly undertaken an terrestrial animals over recent years, but not on aquatic animals. A recent model developed by Audigé and Beckett in 1999 can be used to plan and assess animal health surveys. The aim of this study was to adapt that model for marine aquaculture, in particular to help in planning surveys aimed at substantiating freedom form two exotic diseases, mikrocytosis and perkinsosis, in the French population of Crassostrea gigas. As a first approach, farmed animals are so frequent that it would be very difficult to be representative of a single area or zone. To find the most appropriate sampling scheme, the model was run using @Risk...

Contaminação por mercúrio em sedimento e em moluscos do Pantanal, Mato Grosso, Brasil Zoologia
Vieira,Luiz M.; Alho,Cleber J.R.; Ferreira,Geraldo A.L..
The total level of mercury detected in the sediment and in the tissues of molluscs from the Bento Gomes basin, although low, have shown that the mercury used in the gold mining activities in the Poconé wetlands has contaminated those aquatic habitats in Pantanal. From 69 sediment samples analyzed, 26 % (N = 18) have shown levels ranging from 0.01 to 0.25µg.g-1 of mercury (moist weight). Mercury levels analyzed in 54 samples of mollusc tissues (Ampullaria scalaris Orbigny, 1835; A. canaliculata Lamarck, 1819 and Marisa planogyra Pilsbry, 1933) have shown that 30% (N = 16) were contaminated with levels ranging from 0.02 to 1.16µg.g-1 moist weight. This study shows that the mercury used in digs for gold mining and released into the environment has reached the...

Contrasted survival under field or controlled conditions displays associations between mRNA levels of candidate genes and response to OsHV-1 infection in the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Normand, Julien; Li, Ronghua; Quillien, Virgile; Nicolas, Jean-louis; Boudry, Pierre; Pernet, Fabrice; Huvet, Arnaud.
Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas suffers from chronic or sporadic mortality outbreaks worldwide, resulting from infectious diseases and/or physiological disorders triggered by environmental factors. Since 2008, ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 μVar has been identified as the main agent responsible for mass mortality of juvenile oysters in Europe. Previous studies of genome-wide expression profiling have provided candidate genes that potentially contribute to genetically-based resistance to summer mortality. To assess their value in determining resistance to the juvenile mass mortality that has occurred in France since 2008, we analyzed the expression of 17 candidate genes in an experimental infection by OsHV-1 μVar, and in an in vivo field experiment. Individual...

Contribution à l'étude de mollusques marins : Iridovirus-like et Herpèsvirus-like. Description, caractérisation biochimique, cycle de multiplication viral, diagnostic et étude épidémiologique ArchiMer
Renault, Tristan; Le Deuff, Rose-marie; Cochennec, Nathalie; Chollet, Bruno; Maffart, Patricia.
Among the marine molluscs, Pacifie oyster, Crassostrea gigas, is actually the most reared specie in the world. Noticely in France, where it was imported between 1960 and 1970, and replaced by Portuguese oyster, Crassostrea angulata, which specie was decimated during this period because of iridoviruses. Uncontroled introductions of new species may however be hazardous. Indeed, they might be responsible for the appearance and the dissemination of new diseases of bivalve molluscs in importing country. In addition to these observations, the quasi monobreeding of Pacific oyster in France enhances the necessity to develop research concerning the diagnosis of pathologies affecting this specie, namely the diagnosis of viral diseases. Several families of viruses...

Development of culture techniques for new bivalve species ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Mercer, J. P..
Were are two main reasons for the development of cultivation techniques of new bivalve species. First, the risk exists that traditionally reared species may be ereadicated or severely depleted by pathogenic agents. For example the Portuguese 0yster Crassostrea angulata. disapeared from the French coasts in the early 1970's and worldwide production of the flat oyster, Oslrea edulis has been dramatically reduced by the effects of Bonamia. Secondly, in some countries production may he self-Iimiting by the size and availabilily of national and international markets and a wider species range could offer some promising new economic opportunities for aquaculturists. In particular this applies to species where there are identifiable market shortfalls.

Does the prevalence of Bonamia and Marteilia diseases be reduced on flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) of Atlantic and Mediterranean origin, when they are reared together with the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) in tidal ponds? ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Garnier, Jacqueline; Boulo, Viviane; Heurtebise, Serge.
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis was originally reared in several regions of the European waters. The tidal saline ponds on the Atlantic coasts of France were highly productive before being hit by two consecutive epizooties. Parasitic diseases were described on this species, both of them leading 10 economic losses, as heavy mortalities have usually been recorded before the oysters reach the commercial size. Repeated experiments showed that the two diseases, Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae are still active in this environment. Recently, some evidences were given that haemocytoblasts of Crassostrea gigas had the ability to lyze the Bonamia cells. Therefore, in an experiment of contiguous culture of the two species of oysters, the growth, mortality and...
